The Masquerade is the hottest fraggin thing that's ever happened to North America's racing scene. And highly illegal. They're about only race where you can buy officially merchandised dreamchips of the pilots' runs, fatalities included. (Though I recommend getting the trids, because you'll want to watch them again.)

They do it in the outskirts of a different major city every year, so the police don't wisen up to them too much. Okay, that's a joke, they do it so that the fact they're bribing the local security cartels with preposterous amounts of 'yen doesn't become a regional scandal.

The actual event is an underground (literally underground) obstacle course race. There's a different theme every year. Last year's was deep sea critters, you should have seen it. It was something out of a trid.

They black out the windows on the vehicles and censor all potentially identifying information out of the recordings. The races are all incognito. There are some hotshots from the aboveground scene who come to dodge the paparazzi, but a lot of the competitors are people who couldn't make it anywhere else and have less to lose.
